Does Your Agency Have Legal Authority to Fire Fireworks
This is the critical query. Does your company possess a current fireworks permit from JBPM?”
Locally, pyrotechnics are controlled under the Fire and Rescue Act of 1988. Only licensed operators can purchase, transport, and fire fireworks . The penalty for unlicensed fireworks can involve penalties as high as fifty thousand ringgit and imprisonment.
Request to view the permit. Capture an image of it. Confirm the expiration date. If the agency hesitates or makes excuses , leave immediately.

Industry guidelines suggest:
For small fireworks (up to 75mm shells) : one hundred metres from the firing position. For moderate pyrotechnics (three to six inches): two hundred metres. This map should be shared with the venue, security team, and local police .

Malaysia’s climate is uncertain. Clear skies early evening. Storm by mid-evening.
Ask your agency : What wind velocity stops the display?” Professional guidelines indicate thirty kilometres per hour for smaller pyrotechnics, twenty for larger ones.
What about precipitation?” Minor drizzle may be permissible. Heavy rain and lightning are absolute cancellations .
Who decides to cancel?” The answer should be : Our fireworks supervisor, after discussion with the location and customer.” It should not be: “We’ll leave it up to you .” You are not a pyrotechnics specialist. You should not determine safety-critical choices.
What is the alternative arrangement? If weather cancels the show , do you receive your money back? Does the agency reschedule at no cost ? Obtain this documented.

Training, Experience, and Background Checks
The license belongs to the company . But the actual person pressing the button requires their own credentials.
Ask : “Who is the lead pyrotechnician for our event ?” “What certification do they hold ?”
In Malaysia , approval from JBPM’s Fireworks Training Programme is the basic requirement. Additional credentials from international bodies (like the BPA or the APA) suggest greater skill.
Ask about experience . How many displays has this technician executed?” “Have they ever had an accident ?” A professional will answer honestly .

The Critical Call You Must Make
This is what many customers don’t realise. Your planner should inform the nearby fire station about your fireworks display . This is not optional . This is legally required.
Request: “Have you notified the local fire station ?” What did they say?”
A professional agency will provide the name of the fire officer they spoke with . The date and time of the conversation . The case number if relevant.
Why is this important? Because if a guest calls 999 to report “fire at the event” , the fire department needs to know that it’s a planned fireworks display . Otherwise, they might dispatch multiple emergency vehicles. Otherwise, they might disrupt your gathering.
